AFM - Racing License PDF Print E-mail

The types of AFM memberships offered is as follows:

Competition Membership

This is the license to get if you want to go racing or just want to take the New Rider School. The license application is 3 pages (application form, a waiver release, a medical form) and must be completely filled out and sent back with the necessary license fees. You will be assigned an AFM competition number at the appropriate rider status (FY- First Year, NC- Novice Clubman, N- Novice, or E- Expert). Once you have a competition number and have passed the AFM approved New Racer School, you will be issued a competition license card and are then eligible to compete in AFM races and practices

If you are a brand new racer, you will be assigned a license with the FY status. If you have some prior roadracing experience, you may be assigned a NC, N or E status license depending on the amount of experience you have (and can adequately prove it). Returning riders (who raced with AFM or another organization in the past), will usually be assigned a license at their prior status... but depending on the amount of time since they last held a licence, they may have to take the New Racer School (see below).

  • FY - First Year; must complete an NRS before they may practice at an AFM event.
  • NC - Novice Clubman; have passed an NRS and must enter a Saturday Clubman Class and Sunday AFM classes but will need to show proof of having met lap time requirements for Sunday AFM classes before they can be gridded for Sunday classes.
  • N - Novice; have raced at least one race w/ AFM; Note: N riders may enter Clubman classes and/or Sunday AFM classes, depending on how their lap times match up against lap time requirements for their chosen Sunday AFM classes.
  • E - Expert; have met AFM expert status requirements; note: E riders may enter Clubman classes and/or Sunday AFM classes, depending on how their lap times match up against lap time requirements for their chosen Sunday AFM classes.

Fees for a Competition license are as follows (and subject to change):
Full year $120
Half year (only after June 30th) $60

Very Important: The license application must be completely filled out to be processed; any missing information and appropriate fees will cause us to send it back
Also, medical insurance is required by the AFM, meaning that you must be covered by your own medical insurance before you can get an AFM competition license or before you can race with the AFM. This is extremely important... if you do not have your own insurance, you cannot race with AFM, and if you are caught practicing/racing without it, you may be sespended from racing for a long time.

Associate Membership

This is the license to get if you don't currently plan on racing, but want to be on the AFM mailing list, want the discounted Roadracing World and Motorcycle Technology subscription, and want to be able to vote in AFM elections. Only the application form of the normal 3 page license application needs to be filled out and sent back with the necessary fees. You will also be assigned an AFM number, but it will be a special associate number (i.e. 75A).

You can always upgrade the license to the Competition type at any point during the year, just by sending in the completed extra forms (waiver release and medical forms) and the balance of the fees (i.e. competition license fee minus the associate fee already paid).

Fees for an Associate license are as follows (and subject to change):
Full year $20
Half year (only after June 30th) $10

Reciprocity Membership and Requirements

The reciprocity license is a special one for racers that already hold a license with another roadracing organization. (NOTE: Reciprocity riders are NOT eligible for season end AFM Championship awards, but they are eligible for all raceday awards, contingencies and other prizes)

The AFM offers license reciprocity with most motorcycle roadracing organizations in the US, as well as many foreign or international organizations. That means that if you hold a current and valid competition license with another organization (i.e. WMRRA, OMRRA, MRA, WSMC, etc...) you can participate in AFM events without getting the full AFM competition license... instead you apply for the AFM reciprocity license.

Fees for a Reciprocity license are as follows (and subject to change):
Full year $60
Half year (only after June 30th) $30

The paperwork can be filled out in advance (highly preferred) or at the track (highly not preferred). Reciprocity riders can also post-enter practices/races at the track on the day of an event at the first AFM event they show up at, but as always, we request that everyone pre-enter if possible and these riders should be aware that they may get in only one race (if there are large wait-lists). After the first event, and the rider is on the AFM roster and receiving pre-entry forms, they must pre-enter like everyone else. With the reciprocity membership you get all AFM mailings.

There are some specific restrictions, allowances and requirements involved with the reciprocity license, as follows:

  1. Riders who have Expert status in their normal racing club are treated as AFM experts.
  2. Riders who are are Novice status in their normal racing club AND who have passed their club's new racer school must provide proof of their racing status before racing with the AFM. Without that the must take & pass the AFM Race School or an approved substitute. These schools are offered on certain race weekends... see the current AFM Schedule for AFM school dates.
  3. Reciprocity riders are eligible for all trophies, awards, contingencies, etc.. that are given on each raceday (just like the regular AFM riders). The only difference is that reciprocity riders do not accrue points towards the year end championships. If you do want to collect AFM championship points, you must get the full AFM competition licence.
  4. Reciprocity riders may upgrade to full competition licenses (and become eligible for year end championships in that season), BUT they must request the upgrade and pay the difference in license fees no later than July 1st; after that date, it is not possible to upgrade.
  5. Out-of-club Reciprocity riders who are brand new to AFM, who are showing up at an AFM event for the first time, and who are not on the AFM mailing list get a few allowances... at their first event, their entry fees are treated as pre-entry fees (lower cost) since they had no way to pre-enter; their entries are essentially treated as pre-entries in regards to any wait lists for their chosen classes, to help make sure they'll get on the grid.

Many clubs in the USA offer license reciprocity with AFM. This means that your current AFM license will be honored with them, and they will allow you to participate in their events. However, since the addresses and phone numbers for these clubs change periodically, and our information is not always current and correct, we strongly suggest that you contact any club you might want to race with to make sure that they will honor your AFM license. THIS IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.

NEW... One Event License for Out-Of-Club Racers

The AFM is offering a One Event License for racers that already hold a license with another roadracing organization, but who intend on just raceing with AFM on one weekend. This lowers the costs for those visiting racers and saves AFM some money in later mailing fees. All other requirements for the Reciprocity License apply (must be current and valid license, either Expert or able to show proof of racing status with other club or (without that), that they have taken the New Racer School with the other club, the AFM or an approved substitute); the key difference is that the rider pays a straight $30 license fee regardless of time of year to run just the one event. The only drawbacks are that they will not be put on the AFM mailing list for subsequent mailings of pre-entry forms, newsletters, etc.. and the One Event license cannot be used on another event weekend. If a One Event licensed racer decides to come back for a second AFM event weekend, they will need to either pay for another One Time License fee or upgrade to a regular Reciprocity License.

(NOTE: Just like Reciprocity riders, One Event Licenced Racers are NOT eligible for season end AFM Championship awards, but they are eligible for all raceday awards, contingencies and other prizes.)

Fees for a One Event license is as follows (and subject to change):
One Event $30

The paperwork can be filled out in advance (highly preferred) or at the track (highly not preferred). One Event riders can also post-enter practices/races at the track on the day of an event at the one AFM event they show up at, but as always, we request that everyone pre-enter if possible and these riders should be aware that they may get in only one race (if there are large wait-lists).

Please see the Reciprocity License section for a list of specific restrictions, allowances and requirements involved, as all that stuff applies here as well.
